Tuesday morning we left Prairie du Chien. We knew we were in for a very hot day with heat warnings all over the area. First we stopped at the post office and mailed home 13 lbs of gear. The night before we stopped at Cabella's and bought some hot weather gear. The things we sent home were warm weather things we replaced with hot weather gear. The postal workers really liked our story, helped us pack up our stuff, and took a picture of us with our bikes and package in front of the post office.

After riding up a very big, long hill, we stopped to rest in the shade. We met Jim Reynolds, a very nice recumbent rider out for a ride. We talked for a while and he gave us some pointers on the bad road conditions ahead. He had just come from the way we were going. The bad spots were on the down hill. If we had hit the bad spots without warning we could have been in trouble. Thanks Jim.

The first town we came to was Bagley. We stopped at Grandpa's cooled down, and had sandwichs that we carried out of a neighboring bar, the Irish Pub. As we were eating, Jim stopped in. He was still on his ride. Nice seeing him again.

As we left town, we ran into road construction and a worker who stopped us. They were paving one lane from one town to another. He told us that the paving machine was currently several miles ahead on a long steep hill. They had flag men that were directing the traffic to use the other lane. He told us that it would be very hot by the machines and dangerous. He did not want us to go that way. He gave us an alernate route, but it was mostly gravel. It went to a different town. He told us someone there could direct us to Cassville, the next town we wanted to go to. This really slowed us down with the gravel and the heat.

We arrived in Glen Haven and stopped at a bar to get some water and soda and ask for directions. There were some very nice people that gave us detailed directions to Cassville and they even called ahead for us so we could reserve a hotel. Good thing we did, the road crews had most of the rooms taken. One was full and the other one only had one cabin, which we got.

We headed for Cassville and quickly checked in and hit the pool. Nice way to cool down. With the heat today I drank two 3-litre camel backs of water, six sodas, and other water at our stops. I do believe I sweated it all out. All in all we met some very nice people today, and had a very good time.

Hi Uncle Rog

Sammy just saw the message to her. She said that was really really nice of Uncle Rog to send her a message.
Message from Sammy to Uncle Rog, typed herself.

Blisters

I am sorry to hear about all of your blisters. You might want to try a pair of wool socks, if that is where they are. I recently picked up a pair of no show wool cycling socks made by Smart Wool at a local bike store. You could also find them at a camping type store. I love them. I also use these great band-aids for other spots, they are made by Band-Aid and come in different cuts for fingers, toes and bigger sections for balls of the feet, etc.. I use them on long runs and they stay put well. They come in a silver box. If your behind is blistering, I have no suggestions other than a great chamois cream made by ASSOS. It has which hazel in it - it is all I use. Keep up the great work. I am proud of you. Love, Maria

Maria's Blister help..............

Maria, thanks for all your pro info. (To all reading this, my beautiful sister-in-law is an IRONMAN!!! She blows me away with her dedication. She knows her stuff when it comes to sports info.) I understand the guys bought some new socks, I assume after reading your good suggestions. Roger thinks he is sparing me from worry by not telling me about these issues. When will he get that I will eventually find out.

I thought Chris was joking about the blisters. So I figure if they bought new socks, that's where the blisters are and this is no joke. I would, however, believe it if they have butt blisters too.

As long as they are having fun, it's all good.

Thanks again for the great info. for them.

Ironman

By the way, Maria, IRONMAN!!
Congratualtions. Accomplishment of a lifetime.
Donna

Thanks

Thanks

More blister help

The following was printed in Runner's World. I am sure that they would not mind my cut and paste approach in sharing this information with others in pain. I would have never thought about the antiperspirant on the feet. Great idea. Let me know if it works.

I also want to know how enjoyable chili is in 95 degree heat. :) Great job making up some mileage

Love,
Maria

AVOID YOUR NEXT BLISTER
Three steps you can take to avoid blister pain on your next run.
By Anne Taulane

PUBLISHED 02/13/2008
1. A blister may not sound as debilitating as, say, plantar fasciitis, but one painful, fluid-filled bubble can easily derail your run. Fortunately, caring for blisters is much easier than dealing with an internal foot injury. "With blisters, it's pressure, heat, and friction," says Richard Bouché, D.P.M., a podiatrist with the Sports Medicine Clinic, in Seattle. "Eliminate these three and you eliminate blisters."

2. Not surprisingly, Bouché says that ill-fitting shoes--both in size and width--are the number one cause of blisters. But just as important for sweaty feet are socks made from materials other than cotton, which tends to retain moisture. Some runners who sweat profusely might have success applying antiperspirants to their feet before a run or using powders specially designed to keep dry.

3. If a blister forms, forgo moleskin; it's likely to tear the bubble when you remove it, Bouché says. But if the boil gets large enough that you can see the fluid inside, he recommends draining the blister using a sterile lancet and then applying an antibiotic ointment. Once a blister is popped, it's best to protect the area with a gel-centered adhesive that will alleviate pain when you're on your feet.

G..........and blisters.

Would the G be Glen Haven, WI? That's what I see in the Atlas.

Anyone care to share WHERE those blisters are?

Did someone glue Katie's hands to the handle bars? Rest the arms too Katie.

Make sure Roger gets a "special flag" too, please. I can't wait to see what he picks.

Hey gang, we also need more pics of Chris, the Mastermind of this shindig. Please!!

Glad the rest of you are looking good, hot but good.

where are these blisters? and how come the girls dont have any? Good going girls make them boys work.. Love mom

show them how it's done ladies

I agree with you Lola, how come the ladies don't have any blisters.

As I said - ladies, show those guys how it's done!!!

Blisters

If the number of blisters they are citing is accurate, they are probably from getting sunburnt.

Butts..............

is where I think those guys are getting their blisters. When they stop to rest they don't have to stand up. The girls are smart, they get off their behinds.

So I think the blisters are self induced by over use of their butts. Just a thought.

Bike computer

I had to point out the 112F temp on my bike computer, and the 6% climb. Wow, hot day. That was while moving! When stopped the bike computer temp soared even higher.
