We made pancakes for breakfast in the hotel room because everything was closed. Good thing I had pancake mix packed. They were sub-good. Late start.

Chuck fixed his rear fender, which broke on our 2008 tour.....he had been hauling the new bracket for a while.

There was a lot of road construction.

We stopped at a national fishery and were toured through the sturgeon section. More than 70K sturgeon were there when we visited.

Chucks favorite area was the ColdWater Culture area. The entire room was kept cool. They even had a few albino sturgeon.

We stopped at a restaurant almost to DeSoto that was out of fuel, and had cold salad (sorry chuck). A mile later we found a better place called ______.

The rolling hills of highway 35 were quite warm, with a temp of 93-94 (heat index of 100-101). Frequent stops were needed.

We saw a bald eagle carrying a big fish with little birds trying to make him drop it.

When entering Prairie Du Chien we stopped at Caballas and picked up some better riding gear. The little bit of cotton we are carrying is useless in this humidity (something we are not yet accustomed to).

This lion was waiting for one of us to fall behind.

We arrived at our hotel. From the hotel in Prarie Du Chien we ordered pizza. Tomorrow we are sending some extra stuff home; we knew this would happen. We all badly want to lighten our packs.

No flats since day 1, no problems, just heat. Tomorrow is supposed to be a couple degrees warmer. Lots of people are warning us about the heat.

As I lay here, I ask Katie what she wants me to put in writing about the day. She says she mostly remembers the dead turtles and fish on the road. The turtles were sad, but the fish were mostly interesting. These large fish must have been dropped by birds.

Cold salad for Roger...........

Roger, You really had to eat a salad! Healthy food when the wife isn't around, feels just wrong. Hey?

Once again, my master plan is working. HA HA!!!

I love & miss you.

Day 6 update.................

(They need to get internet or I need my own blog. hehe)

Well folks, day six of this adventure finds our group in more heat and peddling up a mountain higher than Wildcat Mountain, here in WI. (They had to get up Wildcat Mountain to camp on the Survival Bike Trip of Memorial Weekend. It was a tough climb but they did it.)

There was a very small town up on that mountain and construction causing, YUP, road closure on the otherside. So they stopped in the local cafe' for lunch and to figure out what to do. The owner asked where they were headed, knew they really needed that road and helped them out. He knew a couple of guys on the road crew and called them about this group of bicyclists and the road closure problem it was causing them. They told him to pass on to the group that they could use the road. They would have some gravel spots to contend with but the heavy equipment wouldn't be running until tomorrow so it was safe for them. So many nice people in so many places!!!

They did 39 miles today according to Roger. They did have 2 bike problems today. Laura is having issues with her derailer. They have it working ok for now but it needs to be checked out at a bike shop. Then Chris connected hard with a pretty big hole and blew a tire & tube. They fixed that and continued on to Lowden, IA for the night. You guessed it, no internet again tonight. Roger said they are doing some blogging that is being saved to post when they get internet access.

The next town is about 40 miles away and has a bike shop. They hope to get there tomorrow without any further issues. Then they can get Laura's derailer taken care of . Also, Chris bent his rim on that hole and hopes it can be straightened.

We wish them Happy Trails, quick bike repairs and continued support from wonderful folks all along the way.

Jackson and Fawcett have left the stage...

Just thought you might not get the news and two famous personalities have died today, June 25. Michael Jackson, age 50, and Farrah Fawcett, age 62, died of cancer today. They think Jackson's death was due to cardiac arrest. Ed McMahon also passed away yesterday at age 86. Don't like to be the bearer of bad news but figured these were icons that you all might have heard of.

Weather is still remaining HOT...stay cool!

Love you!

Day 4 Update.................

I thought I'd let everyone know todays news. The group did about 35 miles today, in this blistering heat. They are all wearing their heat gear clothing and Roger said it is making a huge difference. (Yes, they hit Cabela's yesterday.)

So they shipped home some stuff already today. They are all trying to get rid of any weight they can. The folks at the post office were really nice. They came out and took pictures of them with the box they were shipping and other pics too. They all wanted to see the bikes.

They left Prairie du Chien and are now in Cassville. The heat requires more rests which they are doing, but they also hit a detour. Road repaving put traffic down to 1 lane. The workers would not allow the bikes on that lane because they would hold up traffic too long. ( I do believe that is illegal. Street bikes are afforded the same laws as vehicles.) Roger said they ended up on a gravel road. This usually means they have to work even harder. However, he did say they figured the gravel was not as bad, heat wise, and the hot tar so they didn't mind it so much.

Roger said to tell everyone they are all doing just fine. They all watch out for each other for signs of heat issues and they are all doing very well. They will not be posting tonight because the motel they are at does not have internet.

They did get a swim in before a storm came through and cooled the temps to 73. They are heading for bed soon for another early rise tomorrow.

So that is about all I have for now. I hope they can post tomorrow. I miss the pics.

Day 5 update............

Well folks, day 5 was another hot one for the group. They did 42 miles today. Roger said they are all doing well though very tired. It was a long day for them.

They left Cassville, WI this morning and discovered road construction is every where. So they changed their route. They changed from the MRT maps to the Adventure Cycling maps. This required them to take a ferry from Cassville across the Mississippi River into Iowa. Chris said this is not cheating because the ferry dropped them off at the landing 2 miles UP river. Anyway, they are camping in a park in Cascade, IA tonight. So no internet again. Darn, no pics yet. We miss the pics.

This new route will take them through Iowa, to Missouri, to possibly Kentucky, (not sure if they will touch Illinois or not) into Tennessee, through Mississippi then into Louisiana. That means lots of states for Chuck to eat beef sticks in.

We continue to send them our encouragement and support as we wish them a safe and wonderful journey. We look forward to their postings and pics when they can.

That's about it for now. For all their sakes, please, think cool thoughts.

Correcting Day 4 update...............

There was a misunderstanding on the road construction crew behavior. Roger told me tonight the single lane was very long and the crew was actually very concerned for their safety. With huge repaving equipment and hot tar they worried someone could get hurt and the hot tar could melt their tires. The crew suggested the alternate route very kindly, for their safety.

My apologies to the road crew and my gratitude for keeping our bicyclists safe.

pictures

Thanks for the update Delores.

I agree, I miss the pictures also.

weather

i don't know what the temp was in cassville but here in dubuque reached up to 101 or so outside. hope that they take thier time and stay cool. should i look for rooms for them here?

pam

Don't look for rooms.

Thanks for the offer but they have to find rooms where ever they quit. A break down could hold them up briefly or a couple of days, so no reservations can be made.

They all have heat gear now and it is helping them very much. Roger said they are all doing fine.

rooms

i won't make reservations. i mean i can call around for them to see about prices and types of rooms they have for what they all need.

No, please...

Remember, they are on bikes. When they are exhausted, they stop at whatever place they find. Thanks, but please don't waste your time. They will stop where ever they land.

Hot but still a good day.

It does sound like the heat didn't reck the day. That is good. Now salad for Chuck & Roger, hmmmm healthy food. They must have been hungry.

The national fishery sounds neat. The bald eagle and other birds sounds amazing to see. The turtles & fish don't sound so good. Stinky? I hope not.

Think you'll make Illinois tomorrow? I'll be waiting to find out.

Safe journey to you all.
